Mountain Bike Shock Maintenance
I really like that bike.
Mountain bike shock maintenance. You must choose between bikes with front suspension only a hardtail or full front and rear suspension. Refit the shock to the bike and then carefully push down on the back of the bike to compress the shock. As i rolled it out of the bike shop i asked the shop sales person how often i should do maintenance on the rear shock. So here it is.
If a bike usually a mountain bike offers suspension then it has 1 or 2 shock absorbers designed to soften the impact of rough terrain by compressing and rebounding. This is because such pumps can t get enough pressure without a struggle. So you ve gone and spent a pretty penny on an absolute beaut of a mountain bike eh. You re supposed to put 20cc in the top of the left hand leg so it coats the spring itself and leaves enough left to lube the bushings which means taking the spring stack out by undoing the top cap.
Most air sleeve maintenance can be done in house. This is especially true if your bike an air fork or a rear air shock. This sits in the fork and lubricates the interface between stanchion tube and fork leg. Then flip the fork over with attached bike if present and pour 10cc of 5wt fork oil into the right hand leg.
Buying a new mountain bike. Once the air sleeve reaches the threads simply turn it clockwise to tighten it back up. Here is some advice to help you keep your mountain bike in peak condition it is a good idea to try to follow these steps after every ride. Check that the shock mounting bolts are tight reinflate the shock to your desired pressure read some tuning tips here and you re done.
A shock pump is an absolute necessity of every mountain bike owner. Internal damper service only needs to be done if not functioning properly or if the shock is making a weezing klunking or slurping sound. You cannot use a standard bike pump to adjust the pressure in your shock or fork. The whole process should take about 35 40 minutes once you are familiar with it.
Doing your own bike maintenance also saves you labour costs and proves an invaluable skill to have in your back pocket in case a mechanical threatens to ruin your ride.
