Road Bike Bottom Bracket Noise
There are many standards in the road cycling world but none that causes more ire than pressfit.
Road bike bottom bracket noise. Often you will feel the cluck as you pedal and before you you may. This noise will go away if you stand up to pedal. The entire drive train follows the pattern of creak when i pedal and stop when i stop pedaling unlike wheel issues like brake discs that rub and make a sound whenever the bike is moving. Many creaks on a bike sound very similar to a creaking bottom bracket.
A creaking bottom bracket is one of the most common complaints heard by shop mechanics from customers who bring their machine in for a service but the noises you hear emanating from the bike can. Often riders will think their bottom bracket is at fault but this isn t always the case. If your titanium frame clicks when you re pedaling hard or climbing check your bottom bracket. There are multiple components that can contribute to a clicking or grinding sound in your drive train in addition to the bottom bracket including the chain the pedals the derailleur and the rear hub.
Remember bottom bracket squeaks have nothing to do with the age of the bike. Remove the crankarms and with the appropriate tools for your type of bottom bracket remove the bottom bracket lube the surfaces in contact with the frame and reinstall the bb making sure it s tight. Sometimes even when a bike is new from the factory the bb isn t tight and it creaks. It s sort of a banging clicking sound coming from the area around the bottom bracket.
Meet your bottom bracket. Cannondale developed the bb30 bottom bracket in 2006 as an open standard. That said the symptoms you describe seem to indicate a problem with the pedal bearings or the bottom bracket. It used a larger 30mm axle which allowed bigger bearings and a bigger bottom bracket shell providing extra stiffness and lower weight.
Im new to all this cycling so i m not sure what this noise is but i suspect it may be the bottom bracket. Jon shows you how to source the problem and then how to get rid of the noise. It happens every time i am out of the saddle peddling going uphill but i can t get it to happen when i am seated. The dreaded creak or click.
I can replicate the noise when the bike is stationary and i put my weight onto. Sometimes a noise that appears to be coming from the bottom bracket is actually coming from the saddle perhaps where the undercarriage attaches to the seatpost or where the saddle top attaches to the undercarriage. A drop of oil at these points will often stop the noise.
