Currently the most widely used axle on bicycles is the 9mm quick release or qr skewer. My road bike has regular qrs but one of my mtbs has boost thru axles front and rear and the other a 15x100 up front upgraded from a regular qr. Our 77 177d disc brake hubs are actually supplied to the customer with both quick release and thru axle end caps so they can make the decision winter road bike tyres. A thru axle set up is more precisely repeatable.
