Road Bike Rider Weight Limit
I am wondering if bike tires have a weight limit.
Road bike rider weight limit. I ride a mountain bike now and i haven t had the same issues. The truth of the matter is that none of the production road bikes are made to accommodate the too short too tall too heavy or too skinny rider. Bike friday provides weight limit information for their folding bikes. Foldable bikes and cruisers with tires measuring about 26 inches are also solid.
Wheels might have a rider weight limit of 110kg but if somebody who is 115kg sits on a bike fitted with them they won t collapse. Most bike fridays are designed with a rider weight limit of 220lbs. With a 350lb rider it s only about a quarter of a percent so paying top dollar to shave a few pounds off the bike wouldn t gain much at all. All wheels are tested to 350 lbs.
The exceptions are the petite models which are designed for 125lb maximum rider weight and the pocket rocket pro and crusoe which are designed with a 190lb maximum rider weight. With say a 150lb rider saving a pound from the bike is about 0 6 of the total weight which still isn t much. I have to admit i am a large guy at 6 3 250lb 190 cm 113 5 kg and i have always had issues with my road bike s tires getting pinch flats. I could never seem to put enough air in the tire to keep the rim off the road on bumps etc.
It is the weaker components that are at risk of failure or wear as heavier rider weight more but also tend to be stronger as well. No rider weight limit road bikes. Lighter weight carbon bikes have a weight limit of 100kg generally fully loaded with rider and kit. They are optimally made for the nominal 160 to 185 lbs 5 6 to 5 11 rider and then adjusted from there.
It is the wheels that limit rider weight more than frames.
